Man, this makes me sad. Dickens isn't flawless, but as a scene-setter, he's one of the best writers in the history of the English language. It's a terrible shame not to be able to read this and smile at the craft.

Ffs, it's just a backdoor argument for parliamentary supremacy over constitutionalism. This is just refried crap from the early '80s.
It’s an argument I find persuasive. For democracy to be meaningful, the people must have the final say. Courts may claim to insulate rights from the “grubby incentives” of partisan politics, but as political theorist Leah Downey recently noted, ceding control of crucial institutions to unaccountable elites may feel safe in practice but is indefensible in principle.

Still, Mussolini probably comes closer to Trump in his shiftability than any of the other demagogues. Another vote for Dennis Mack Smith’s Mussolini bio here. It’s fantastic.
