Big chunks of it are Durham Cathedral in the films, so very romanesque, but I doubt the tankie lad could tell one from another, or cares.

I always took the comparisons to gypsies or lascars as just a way of pointing out his difference and his darker colouring too. He may have been one of those things, or (more probably) Irish, but ultimately he's a foundling from a port city.
He could be anything, from anywhere. He doesn't belong.
