The WondLa books were always about family...and not just Eva's found family but the other inhabitants she shares this planet with. Like it or not, Eva, Rovee, Otto and all the rest are in this together...

...that evening, at the nearby R. Michelson Galleries, I met one of my heroes, Maurice Sendak. Though I had been illustrating for over a decade, I'd only released my 3rd book, "The Spider & The Fly" at this point, I'll never forget how kind, gracious and supportive both these legends were.🥹

My Ted Turner colorization concludes (for now) with one of my favorite entries in the "Stuff I Did in the '80s" series: running a D&D game for my sister, little brother and our neighbor. Roll for initiative!⚔️🛡️

Like Edmund Dulac, I am fascinated by Tenggren's midlife style change. I think he was more successful with the Little Golden style than his previous work. I had the opportunity to browse his sketches and art while visiting the Kerlan Collection and was captivated by his storytelling. What a legend!🎨

After leaving Disney Studios in the early 1940s, Tenggren was one of the first artists hired to illustrate a new book series, Little Golden Books. He illustrated many classics, like "The Poky Little Puppy", which is considered the Bestselling Children's Book of All Time.

Tenggren eventually relocated to the USA and was hired by Walt Disney as concept artist for the studio's first feature film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves", conjuring imagery evocative of the Golden Age artists. He would continue to work with Disney on several features, including "Pinocchio".

In continuing with celebrating the 20th anniversary of "Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You", here is a collection of preliminary sketches (some have never been shown) which reveal that creature design for this book happened over the course of many years. Enjoy!
