Note this was widely understood to *be* a problem at least since Washington's farewell address in 1796. It took the better part of a decade to fix this shit because of the onerous requirements to even hold a constitutional convention needed to ratify a single goddamn amendment

It took until after the shitshow that was John Adams's administration to even remotely address this problem. Prior to 1803 the vice president was the runner-up in the presidential election. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were at each other's throats but the latter had to be the former's VP

And despite the almost immediate formation of federalist and anti-federalist factions with distinct, often opposed, material interests, as well as slavery being an obvious dividing line even in the 1780s, the framers didn't anticipate the formation of political parties. I know this sounds insane
