hello new entities that have recently followed me or are about to. i think? a lot of u followed me elsewhere b4, but for those that didn't, heads up: i do not tend to separate work-appropriate and less-work-appropriate stuff into separate accounts.

I strenuously object to the implicit assertion that people don't want to hear about other people's holidays. I do! In Iran they have an outdoor picnic day (Sizdah Bedar). In Japan there's a bean-throwing day (Setsubun). There's a whole world of fascinating rituals and traditions.

the secret third one: "ok you got some stuff done, but you could've done more if only u were less disabled" (i hate that this one is the loudest 😞)
When it is time to do the year-end wrap up, inside you there are two wolves:

One says "HOW DARE YOU?" and recites your achievements like Daenerys Targaryen about to burn a city.

One says "Oh, nevermind. I have no memory of anything I have accomplished. Truly, I have achieved nothing this year."

learning about other festival days is great. depending on the background of the festival, u can also find some new ones to celebrate urself (respectfully, ofc).

《德路詩經》
於是喂為填胃,而食一切餡也。

無薩大師曰:葬而填地,則人並餡也。
In books of derush it is said: all food is stuffing, for is not the purpose of food to be stuffed into us?
The masters of musar said: we too are stuffing, as eventually we will stuff the Earth.

this is technically 9.5 because uuuh I did not take a bunch of pictures back then (in retrospect for obvious reasons)

whats also amusing to this, is that when the printing press was invented, there was debate among the Rabbis if printing was considered "writing" and therefore kosher, or also if it's rather engraving.

leading to this very funny quip that surely Solomon could have invented the printing press:

From when is the name 'stuffing' called upon it? Strongbird says: from when it is stuffed. Avi's mom says: from when it was pronounced as stuffing. Others say: from the beginning of the year, if it was declared verbally.

This is what Hillel did, at the time that the Temple stood. He wrapped up some turkey and some cranberry sauce in a biscuit and ate them together.

*dashing to the store to grab a new pair of blue jeans and extra some flour for my fried chicken dredge for dinner, trying to decide if i want sf garlic noodles or korean tacos for lunch, i put the rock radio station on in the car and fire off a quick skeet* "uuugh, america just has no culture"
This is the most incredible "well, actually" reply I've ever gotten in my life, and I'm a connoisseur of them at this point. America has no culture. Ok 👍

In the festive meal one is required to eat a minimal amount of side dishes and each dish must be made by a separate household. It is asked if one is required to eat a Midwest Salad. And the sages answer, in all lands a salad is a mixture of vegetables, in the Midwest it is a mixture of any food.

okie, halachic question of the day that @orphanim.bsky.social and i were discussing: does eink count as writing for the purposes of the prohibition on destroying siddurim and such, and furthermore does this mean that the page turn animation would count as destruction?

sometimes I wonder what these people were doing before llms. were they always this careless and rude and we just didn't notice?

like, I've seen a competent engineer submit code that llms were involved in,; they tend to thoroughly read, tweak, and rewrite. then there's these chucklefucks.
"Finally, you seem to not give a thought about the fact that your contributions demand work of other people. The fact that you were able to generate large amount of code that passes test is interesting, but that's only 20% of the work
One of the many joys of using AI for programming is the creation of huge PRs on complex topics that the authors barely understand, but still suggest "because they work". Here's a great example from #OCaml github.com/ocaml/ocaml/...

Kudos to OCaml's maintainers for handling this so gracefully.

zombies, run! helped me start exercising many aeons ago, and continues to hold a special place in my heart because of that (and also because it's just a genuinely fun format).

vey happy to see this
just incredibly thrilled to announce that after months and months of uncertainty over the future of the game, and several I have bought Zombies, Run!, the game I co-created and have been making for the past 12 years:

Ok palate cleanse time. In case you missed it, here's my most popular post ever
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

what is with the trend of pages having per paragraph transitions set up such that text slowly fades into view _after_ you've scrolled to where it should be?

who decided this was a good idea? why? who hurt you? have u ever actually used a webpage before?
