Hiya folks! For new people here's the big project we have been working on in Panamá!
The Mothbox!

It's a fully #opensource insect camera trap with loads of documentation to build the whole thing yourself from off the shelf parts!

Kind of like if at a primatology conference conversations went like:
"you hear about the project where the apes can solve video puzzles at higher frame rates than humans?"

"Yeah! And also if you're trying to slaughter them en masse, it's better to kill adults with hot temps, but freeze babies!"
Entomology conferences + Human-Computer Interaction conferences are the only ones i know where it's just taken as normal that while 75% of the researchers love their subjects (bugs/humans), a solid 25% of the people's work is in exterminating them as efficiently as possible (pest control, military).

Giant companies love pushing AI, because it allows them to do stuff like plow cars into people, or make them commit suicide, or illegally wrongfully arrest people, and then they never face any consequences.

Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.

For folks new to Portland for #entsoc25, a quick public transit tip:

The buses will just accept a tap from any old credit card! You just hop on and go! They even keep track of your transfers if you use the same card!

So rock that #publictransit!

The AP tracked down details of some of the people killed in President Trump's military strikes on drug smugglers he describes as narco-terrorists.

They were, with one exception, not high-level criminals. One was a fisherman. One was a bus driver; another a taxi driver.

That's what the conservation funding world feels like

We appreciate the money

It's a lot of money

But it's 100x too small to achieve the impact you're asking
