I'm in D4 and worked with someone the other week to help them recover their dog and belongings after a destructive encampment eviction.

From what I've seen, these cleanups are not meeting expectations of dignity. People are being shuffled around, harassed, and given new problems rather than helped.

I'm starting to be persuaded that Schumer tried and failed to convince them to hold the line instead of helping arrange it. Still inexcusable when the stakes are this high, so I'm sticking with it: it's past time for a change.

Tens of thousands of Americans are projected to die due to the loss of the subsidies. Millions more will suffer the consequences of being underinsured.

The explicit point of the shutdown was to fight for those people with the only shred of leverage the Democrats had.

What a waste.

Please move to remove Schumer immediately as minority leader. He definitely helped facilitate this, and even if he didn't, his lack of leadership earlier in the year enabled it.

You asked a question on the Internet that has an answer.

What I do know is that I spent a lot of time with someone who has been set back over and over by sweeps and harassment just the other week, and whatever is being done right now is falling short of treating everybody with dignity.

Finland does exactly that, it is pretty successful.

On homelessness, pretty much 💔

It feels like Portland is trapped in an endless, frenetic cycle of half-assing systemic fixes and swinging back to sweeps and criminalization.

I remember when she got first elected; I was working at an environmental org in the four corners area. Enthusiasm for her was so high.

What a disappointment.

Absolutely, the true believers feel impunity thanks to the corrupt pardon power.

But they're all cowards, too. They're afraid of Trump viciously going after them if they don't stay in line - and increasingly of consequences if he doesn't stay in power.

I've watched it enough to know: She'll blame democrats, categorically, for anything bad. Always.

After the civil war, the US failed to reckon with its racism. Slavery was illegalized but the roots and fruits of a society that didn't think slavery was immoral were left basically intact.

160 years later we have Prager U and a president attacking the Smithsonian for saying "how bad Slavery was".

I want the answer to be to have precisely these conversations; listening, I always feel like I'd somehow be more persuasive, that if they'd just get at the root of the support for Trump and MAGA they'd make some kind of breakthrough.

But the more I watch, the more clear it is: I'm kidding myself.

Framing undocumented people as illegal itself is an inaccurate and dehumanizing attack on millions of people simply pursuing life and liberty for themselves and their families.

ICE was formed opportunistically in 2003 by the Bush administration-a dangerous centralization and militarization of US immigration enforcement.

Documenting migration is an administrative problem, not an excuse for rampant surveillance, belligerent police violence, and illegal for-profit detention.
