HORTUS SANITATIS, Frédéric Coché (Fréon, 2000). I’ve remarked in the past that Coché is what all other ‘spiritual’ wordless comics want to be but can’t manage — beguiling, opaque, expansive. I can’t say I understand it, but I do find myself wanting to — more than I can say for a lot of other comics…

CELEBRATED SUMMER by Charles Forsman (Fantagraphics, 2013): just about the perfect comic for Where I’m At right now — a really sharp bit of emotional avoidance. Quite taken with this one; between this and TEOTFW, Forsman has a special way of making books that read super fast without feeling slight.

First time I’m hearing this term, but it was great. Mostly great to see a lot of people, which to me is what these trips are all about.

Hmm… oddly drawing a blank. I need to think about this.

Continued my tradition of song-based commissions at Thought Bubble this year, with this gorgeous piece by @jennacha.bsky.social, based on “‘Til I Die” by the Beach Boys:

Turner: sketch (“The Arrival of Louis-Philippe: Shipping in Portsmouth Harbour”) versus reimagined, if incomplete, painting (“The Arrival of Louis-Philippe at the Royal Clarence Yard, Gosport, 8 October 1844”)

“Hagai you have three more days left on your trip why are you posting book haul photos now” because I’m hoping if I post these then I can resist the compulsion to buy more. “Wow Hagai that really is a lot of books that you bought on this trip” thanks I have a shopping problem

One of the Frémok comics I bought when I was in Rome was ÉN SERIE by Aude Semama. Buying a book I’d fully never heard of is—admittedly—a fairly rare occasion for me, but Semama’s art just immediately entranced me. Immediately inspiring and energizing.

had never noticed this in the pro-shot pictures but there were very clearly two figures drawn on the canvas of “Present and Past” that de Chirico painted over, which is really cool to see and a reminder that there really is no replacement for seeing the work in person

saw some de Chirico today… that’s my guy right there

For six dollars, we are also offering a process edition. This comic was written more loosely than my usual and, so this process edition is honestly highly recommended as well, to see Justin bring it to life over time. Again, you can find it here:

“I Thought I Heard Your Voice Just Then” is a new eight-page comic drawn by @jlaguff.bsky.social and written by myself. You can read it below or purchase it on a pay-what-you-want basis on Itch.io (which I recommend, Bluesky compression being what it is):

Today’s mail, courtesy of Mexico City’s Máquina de Aplausos — a collection of Seth’s writing on comics, plus a fun repro of an excerpt from GREAT NORTHERN BROTHERHOOD OF CANADIAN CARTOONISTS. (Seth made a tiny gumball comic to go with it but my package came torn — must’ve fallen out. Womp womp!)
