A cold morning at Colliford Lake. Fortunately the Baird's Sandpiper was showing well on the shoreline at 10.40 with a single Dunlin. Park in Dam car park and walk left for about 400 yards.

Am I in Greece or on one of the Western Isles. Warm weather, white sand and turquoise sea. Apart from the cry of the gulls I can't hear a thing.

We first came to the Western Isles in 1995 and this surely must be the only year we have ever had 5 consecutive days of warm sunshine. Having seen all the resident birds today is a relaxing day on the beach. Apart from waves breaking I can't hear any sound. Bliss.

Paid my first ever visit this afternoon to Longham Lakes. Thanks to all who gave me parking and access info. The Lesser Scaup still showing well at the south end at 14.10.

Sitting in the car at Powderham shop car park I could see distantly through the trees most of the 50+ Cattle Egrets reported near the castle earlier. Suddenly most of them took flight and obligingly are now at the tops of 2 bare trees where I counted 45.

A lovely afternoon but I mistakenly thought the grassy track to Powderham Marsh would not need wellies. It was rather muddy in places and nothing of note when I arrived at the end of the track. Marsh looks good though for later this month. Kestrel was a Devon year tick.

A beautiful morning at Chard Reservoir. The 2w Little Gull still feeding over the water at 11.20. Thanks Dave for putting the news out earlier

No sign of the Lesser Scaup at The Skern over the high tide. Walked to the second jetty along The Taw estuary and the Green-winged Teal was roosting on the rocks along the edge of the channel. At Fremington the Spotted Redshank was at the top of the Pill at the water's edge.

The sun is shining this morning after yesterday's awful day. It's a bit windy at Dozmary Pool though but the 3 Ring-necked Ducks still here at 10.00 favouring the south west corner.

As we were passing and Ann wanted a walk I drove down to Chapel Amble late afternoon. The flood opposite the car park has increased since I was last here in January. I couldn't see any Water Pipits but a Green Sandpiper was a year tick.

Decided to park at Powderham Church and walk up to Turf today. I couldn't find the White-fronted Goose but the Long-billed Dowitcher was showing at fairly close range feeding along the channel by the lock.

The 3 Long-eared Owls were still at Deeping St James this afternoon viewable from the hide. Earlier I was sat on the seat where the river splits and 2 Glossy Ibis flew by me and landed briefly before flying across the river out of sight.

A much better day, blue sky but still cold. Started with the Glossy Ibis at Stiffkey before driving down the flooded road to Cley beach car park. Two Long-tailed Ducks in with the large Scoter flock. At Weybourne 4 Tundra Bean Geese in with a very large Pink-footed Goose flock.

After a wet morning I saw a pair of Smew at Eyebrook before moving on to Deeping St James. Three Long-eared Owls were showing from the right hand side of the hide. The Little Owl took more scanning before I found it partly obscured.

Once the mist cleared mid morning it turned into a lovely day. It took about 30 minutes for a Willow Tit to visit the feeders by the hide but it gave great views for a few minutes. I had to go looking for Marsh Tits though, finally finding 2 along the Aqueduct Trail.

Two visits to Chapeldown Road Torpoint this afternoon. Tide very high the first visit but 2 Great Northern Divers, singles of Black-necked Grebe and female Common Scoter. Second visit with tide dropped slightly there were 3 Pale-bellied and 3 Dark-bellied Brents feeding along the shore line.

High tide and rough sea this morning off Pendower Beach. Just 4 Great Northern Divers and I didn't see a single Black-throated Diver or Grebe.
January 10, 2025 at 12:22 PM
Spotted Redshank at 10.15 just off Devoran Quay. Wet, cold and breezy this morning but at least no snow.
January 10, 2025 at 10:24 AM
A lovely calm morning at Helford Passage. I walked along to Bar Beach and scoped the 2 Red-necked Grebes which were up river. 8 Great Northern Divers between Bar Beach and Passage House Inn.

It's hardly stopped raining all day in West Cornwall but at least we haven't had any snow. Finally saw a Black Redstart at Marazion just east of Godolphin Hotel. Along with several Chiff Chaffs and Rock Pipits the Black Redstart was flying up and picking insects off the wall at 14.30.
January 8, 2025 at 3:30 PM
Unlike Saturday when I failed to see the Little Bunting this morning I walked along the public footpath from Lesingey Lane. After scoping 2 female Bullfinches in the far hedge I scoped left and the Little Bunting was about 10 foot up in the hedge. After about 5 mins it flew left into the field.

My first visit to Stolford this winter and it was high tide. Overcast but only a very light wind. The Brent Geese, dark and pale bellied were off Hinckley Power Station bobbing up and down behind a pebble ridge, 20+. A Black Redstart was on the boulders.

A flat sea off Broadsands this morning with 3 diver species present. After lunch at Goodrington a detour to Dawlish Warren but unfortunately the Dusky Warbler hadn't been seen since 11.45. Photo shows where it was seen.
December 3, 2024 at 3:45 PM
After last week's awful weather it was warm and sunny today at Teignmouth. As we were passing I thought I would see if there were still 12 Great Northern Divers present. Unfortunately not as I only saw one off Shaldon.

A warm sunny day in North Cornwall. A very mobile flock of around 750 Golden Plover at Dozmary Pool only landed for a few minutes
Then a relaxing couple of hours at Davidstow Airport watching the Wagtails but saw a Wheatear which will probably be my last one in 2024. Adult Yellow-legged Gull there
