Some questions remain! The Stephens house was older than 1904 but we haven't been able to crack how old yet. Not entirely clear why the carriage house was incorporated into the museum, besides it worked at the time. Look for a full-length blog on our site once we learn more!

In its final years before the museum's construction began 1949, the carriage house was used as the University Nursery School. It still serves as museum storage space and exhibition construction.

After she passed away, her home was used by Detroit Institute of Musical Arts. The carriage house outlived the main structure, eventually remodeled to serve as the Children's House, an unconventional art school where kids explored their creativity with minimal adult instruction, from 1935-45.

Had to go on a bit of a research quest for this one. From what we could tell - the carriage house at the rear of the museum was a pre-existing structure on the lot going back to the days when Clarinda L. Stephens, widow of a lumber baron, lived in a mansion on Woodward, north of Kirby Street.
