John Brown was executed this day 166 years ago

He was executed for trying to end slavery the only way it was ever going to end, by war

You can take some satisfaction in knowing that Lost Causers, Neo-confederates, and fascists hate him. Basically the Trump administration.

Remigration means ethnic cleansing and genocide.

It is gutter racism and evokes the darkest fascist and Nazi hellscapes of the 20th century.

We smashed it on the battlefields of Europe and Asia 80 years ago and marching over the Edmund Pettus Bridge 60 years ago.

We'll smash it again.

I think a loss of TN-7 next week could be as earthshattering as the elections a few weeks ago.

You then have some House of Cards scenarios that would end GOP control. Wildcard: Motion to Vacate the chair requires 8 GOP'ers to sign-on, not just one person under prior rules packages.

If Dems won by plus +14 they would get a significant seat bonus, over their proportional share, due the math of FPTP. It would wash out any Gerrymandering effect.

I'm certainly inclined to believe +14 is quite an outlier for now . . .

The Speaker Carl Albert.

Different map then.

The math nature of single-member districts is that, once one party starts starts to break into +5 to +10 across all races, the seat bonus (over the parties' proportional share) becomes huge.

Take the 1976 House election, the last time any party got 2/3rds of the seats.

FDR's Four Freedoms (domestic policy) and his 2nd Bill of Rights should be full blown implemented and parties should actually run on this. Most everything social and civil rights in 85 years has a through line to those expressions.

Four Freedoms (1941) actually had a hell of a domestic program, as did his 2nd Bill of Rights (1944)

Vought, Cato, Heritage, et al. hate all of this with every fiber of their being. So much of the last 90 years has been trying to get this and preserve it.

As @jamellebouie.net points out, we cannot go back to '09 or '93 or pick another year & "retreat to normalcy". We need large policy *and* constitutional reforms to renew the republic.

This is what I called for in my recent piece in @liberalcurrents.com

I'm serious - the incomplete task of of Reconstruction laid the ground for insurgent racism and authoritarianism to rise again, despite the 20th century victories in Civil Rights.

We should not let a chance at radical democracy and equality pass when we get it again.

Thank you 🙏 for sharing. God bless the men and women of the greatest generation. Saved the world from fascism. Sadly we are doing that here at home now.
