The Saxby Gale severely hit Atlantic Canada on October 4 & 5, 1869. On the 150th anniversary of this storm, @ryansnoddon.bsky.social wrote a nice summary of its evolution and impacts, including major flooding between Amherst and Sackville.

How does oxygen get from the ocean surface layer to the ocean's intermediate depth and bottom waters? 🧪🌊

I wrote a brief overview of the processes involved and the key regions of ocean ventilation:

Map projections make compromises between accurately representing either area, angles, or distances. Tissot indicatrices (blue circles & ellipses) inform us visually about map distortions. Standard parallels here are at 50°N and 70°N for the Albers and Lambert projections. 🧪

Always interesting to see how successive El Niño events and La Niña events modulate the global warming time series. The 1997-1998, 2015-2016, 2018-2019 and 2023-2024 El Niño events are easily detectable as bumps in this graphic from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social.

Weather apps on our smartphones appear kind of magic!

But formidable international observations, data exchange, and forecasting infrastructures are behind this "magic". 🧪

Absolutely! Breaking apart the operational teams that are creating and maintaining these extremely valuable data products can be done quickly. Rebuilding these teams later will take much longer. Such ideological budget cuts are part of the broader War on Science.

In early 2016, before #Trump won his first Republican presidential nomination, a prescient book by @shawnotto.bsky.social described three components of the war on #science.

1) Industrial
2) Religious/Ideological
3) Identity Politics

After subscribing to the #WashingtonPost for seven years, I cancelled my subscription.

For me what moved the needle beyond the "no repair zone" was #Bezos 's recent heavy-handed decision to control content in the Opinions columns. This caused another resignation today.
