The best way that I can describe Sumire after Alphinaud & Alisaie leave her is it’s very reminiscent of Sailor Moon after Galaxia tosses the Sailor Guardian Crystals & Mamoru into the Galactic Cauldron. What is the point of continuing to fight when her only reason for fighting is now gone?

“Hmph.” He could not help himself as he closed his eyes, but there was a smile on his face, and his words were meant in jest. “Your damnable optimism is rubbing off on me, woman.” “‘Is’?” she asked, and when he opened his eyes there was a sly look on her face. “I thought it had already had. Who was it that gave Zero hope that we might yet find a way to reverse the effects of the Darkness on the Thirteenth?” He cocked a brow at her. “I can’t say I remember.” Her eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint in them. “And who was it who continued to give Vrtra hope that we would find Azdaja and rescue her, even when her soul was merged with Zodiark’s lingering essence?” A smirk played at the edges of his lips, and he took the time to rest his hand upon the ever-growing bump before he replied. “Clearly the pregnancy has taken a toll on your ability to recall certain events, we may need to have you see a chirurgeon if this keeps up.” Sumire eye’s widened, and then she tossed her head back and laughed. He loved her laugh, the sound of it. It was melodic, and it washed away all of the parts of himself that he hated. Fear, doubt, anxiety, it was easy to forget all of that when she laughed. As all of those negative thoughts were washed away, they were replaced with new thoughts, new desires. “I hope they have your laugh.” Before he could even fully register the thoughts, or put words to the desires, they simply left his mouth and were spoken aloud. The tips of his ears burned when he heard himself, and realized what he had said. Have I ever once considered what they might be like? In response to his words, Sumire stopped her laughter, her cheeks pink, face bright despite the clear exhaustion writ across it. “Eh? Just mine?” she pressed a finger to her lips, “I hope they have yours. That way I can hear it more than just once in a blue moon.” “Your laugh is far better than mine own.” He retorted. “So? It isn’t a competition. Besides,” with a huff she crossed her arms and closed … “You taste divine.” He towered over her once more. Neither of them had bothered to light the lamps, so the only illumination came from the window to her right. Moonlight flooded in, bringing stark contrast to Estinien and his body. His tanned, worn and scarred skin, dotted with scales of an azure hue. Small patches of them littered his chest, handfuls of scales that shone, reflecting the light that came in from the window. Once he had told her that her hair glowed in the light of the moon. The same was true for him. His lunar white hair, which was out of its normal ponytail, framed his face, the soft locks running just past his shoulder blades. With the light of the moon, she could see his eyes, set upon her and open wide, hungry and needing, brows set in a line and lips dry. Since going to the edge of existence and back, and witnessing the death of Gods who wielded power beyond her comprehension, Sumire had struggled in her faith to the kami. It was difficult, to put one’s faith in the unseen and unknown, after all that she had seen. To her, divinity no longer existed, she had put an end to such notions when she and the Scions had struck down Hydaelyn, and when she had struck down the Endsinger. Yet, if divinity still exists, it exists in him. The man who had captivated her, who had her wound tightly around his finger. The man she would do anything for, rewrite reality just to bring him back to her side. To Sumire, a woman who had lost all notion of the divine, it was Estinien who was divine. She did not tell him this, of course. It was her own secret, buried within her heart. He wouldn’t like such a thing, anyhow, despite his own statements to her. Instead, she smiled, and settled herself back on the bed, her arms above her head, long hair flowing across the bed as though a river of pure moonlight were cutting across the velvet blankets beneath her. If he was to call her divine, then she would play her part, and she would play it well. “How do I look?” She asked, and he chuckled once more, letting go of her chin. “As beautiful as ever.” Cocking his head over towards the dresser, he raised a brow. “Do you not wish to see what it is?” “A hairpin of some kind, I would imagine.” She said as she pushed herself up and off the bed, making her way to the small mirror that was hung on the wall next to the dresser. In it’s reflection, she saw herself, of course. But both her and Estinien had taken the liberty to not wear anything in their own room after their bath, so her nude body was on full display for her to see, including all of the scars which littered it. From the ugly gouge just above her stomach, to the faint glowing patch of skin between her breasts that served as a reminder of how close she’d come to having her soul shattered. And all of the various scars, from various battles, that were starting to fade with time. But what drew her attention was not the scars, nor the memories behind them, but the purple piece of metal in her hair. Turning her head to the side, so that she might get a better look, she let out a soft gasp when she realized what it was. A purple dragon, it’s wings in mid-flight, sat on the side of her head. It spanned the length of her head, in fact, with it’s tail at the edge of her hair, and it’s face parallel to her eyes. Like her, it too looked towards the future, ever moving to that distant horizon. On it’s tail, a pink crystal swayed as she moved, turning her head to look at it from each and every angle. So engrossed in the beauty of it was she, that she didn’t even notice as Estinien stepped up behind her until his arms were around her waist, pulling her back into his body as he leaned down and brushed his lips against the shoulder opposite of the dragon. “I take it you like it?” He asked, his breath fanning out across her skin, and she let out a soft laugh as she leaned back into him, her eyes still transfixed on the dragon. “It is beautiful, Estinien. And f… He did not have the time to think about it, though, to consider too much of what that silence meant. For it all happened as soon as he rounded a corner, as soon as he arrived to the empty stretch of land, where the Warrior of Light and Zenos had been fighting. And for a second, as he caught his breath, the only thing he could do was stand and stare, at the scene that played out before him. Sumire was on her knees, clutching her head, crying out in pain before she fell on her side. In front of her, Zenos watched, and then he pulled his sword out, and began to advance. Estinien thought that Sumire might get up, might stop him, duck or dive out of the way. But Zenos lifted his sword, and she was still unmoving. In that moment, time stopped, as Estinien watched Zenos prepare to take the life of the woman he loved. Ah. There it was. Those thoughts that he had tried to repress. Those feelings he had lied to himself about for so long. That word that he had avoided for so long. A word which scared him, for it had been love that had driven him to pick up his lance and fight, that he might get revenge for his fallen family whom he loved so dearly. How many lives had been lost upon his lance, just for that one, simple word? He loved her, though. And in that moment, he could no longer deny it. In that moment, Estinien surrendered himself to it, to the love he felt for Sumire. What happened next was a blur, as he acted out of pure instinct. A rage, a fury and anger that he not felt since the damn Eyes had been pulled from his armor, his soul torn from Nidhogg’s, filled his body. It was a frightening one, an overwhelming one, and if he’d had the time to think of it, he might’ve questioned how he lived much of his life up to that point feeling that rage and anger. Nidhogg, his lance, was in his hands as he jumped, spinning right at the perfect arc, and weaving the ambient aether around him as he dove down, lance directed at the man who pointed his sword at Sumire.
