#COP30 helped to bring the ocean into the climate spotlight, but the #DeepSea is still at risk. We call on governments to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining and end destructive bottom trawling on seamounts.

The Casper octopus gets its nickname from its lack of pigment cells, which gives it a ghostly appearance.

Discovered in 2016 more than 4,000 meters below the ocean surface off Hawai’i, it is the deepest-known octopus without fins.

The deep ocean is an enormous, natural carbon sink, storing massive amounts of carbon that would otherwise be in the atmosphere. Yet it can only continue to perform this critical role if it is healthy.

As #COP30 wakes into Ocean Day, we shout loud and clear: climate action starts with the deep.

Will #COP30 deliver?

Without protecting the deep sea, we endanger one of Earth’s greatest natural climate defenses! The deep ocean is heating up, acidifying, and losing oxygen faster than ever, and it's under threat from mining, trawling, and drilling.

It’s #WorldOctopusDay!

From dumbo octopuses with ear-like fins and delicate cirrate species, to octopus nurseries around hydrothermal springs, the deep sea is full of remarkable octopus life. They thrive in darkness, cold, and crushing pressure, a reminder of the ocean’s endless surprises. #DeepSea
