🆕 Today we are proud to launch the Knowledge Hub — a digital space to learn, share, and celebrate the vital role the deep ocean plays in life on Earth.

The deep sea is vital, mysterious, & vulnerable. The more we know, the better we can protect.

#COP30 helped to bring the ocean into the climate spotlight, but the #DeepSea is still at risk. We call on governments to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining and end destructive bottom trawling on seamounts.

We’ve released Shifting Tides, a new briefing paper unpacking what sits behind TMC’s sudden pivot to the U.S.
It’s a move being sold as progress but our analysis shows it introduces a tangle of political, legal, and reputational risks that can’t be ignored.

Deep-sea mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone may release waste into midwaters that support diverse marine life. A study in Nature Communications finds such discharges could dilute key food particles and disrupt trophic links from zooplankton to large marine predators. go.nature.com/3Jm0C2U 🌊 🧪

The Casper octopus gets its nickname from its lack of pigment cells, which gives it a ghostly appearance.

Discovered in 2016 more than 4,000 meters below the ocean surface off Hawai’i, it is the deepest-known octopus without fins.

So… the new report on #DeepSeaMining outside American #Samoa basically says the quiet part out loud: the tech doesn’t work, the economics don’t work, and the strategy is 🤷. Turns out the real abyss isn’t the ocean floor, it’s the business model. Time to #KeepItInTheSeabed and #DefendTheDeep.

#NEAFC missed an opportunity to protect deep-sea ecosystems at its annual meeting last week.

With #COP30 underway and the 2026 UN bottom fisheries review approaching, NEAFC must align with global biodiversity & climate goals. deep-sea-conservation.org/neafc-reject...

The deep ocean is an enormous, natural carbon sink, storing massive amounts of carbon that would otherwise be in the atmosphere. Yet it can only continue to perform this critical role if it is healthy.

As #COP30 wakes into Ocean Day, we shout loud and clear: climate action starts with the deep.

On an expedition, the E/V Nautilus, a U.S government-funded vessel, mapped more than 14,000 square kilometers (5,400 square miles) of the Cook Islands’ seafloor and documented deep-sea biodiversity.

Environmental activists protested the expedition, arguing it would help accelerate deep-sea mining.

Will #COP30 deliver?

Without protecting the deep sea, we endanger one of Earth’s greatest natural climate defenses! The deep ocean is heating up, acidifying, and losing oxygen faster than ever, and it's under threat from mining, trawling, and drilling.

The ocean has shielded us from the worst of the climate crisis: absorbing over 90% of the excess heat and storing vast amounts of carbon.

Because 90% of the ocean is the deep sea, protecting the deep is essential for a healthier, more resilient planet.

Deep-sea corals are found all over the world and can live for thousands of years.

Unlike their tropical cousins, they don’t need sunlight to survive. Instead, they feed on passing microscopic organisms, which they grab with their tiny tentacles.
