What's the alternative? To look around at all the need and do nothing because I can't do everything? That might be the most defeatist of all the cognitive distortions. So, no, I'll keep helping one starfish at a time and trust that it is meaningful action. 8/9

I don't have enough money or time to alleviate all of the needs of those recipients, but I believe my little bit still makes a difference to them. 7/9

Solo meliorism is why I "bother" to pledge $1 to a Patreon creator, or give $5 or $10 to a charity. It's one bottle of water for someone living on the street. It's one call to one Senator about one bill to help one vulnerable group (one galaxy*). 6/9

Group meliorism is motivating -- you see others trying, so you try even harder. When it's solo, we have to take it on faith that our small act is inherently worth doing, even if we don't know whether anyone else is amplifying our effort with their own. 5/9
