I don’t mean to be discouraging. Maybe you’re really onto something, moving in a new direction. But I feel a bit like Matisse viewing “Demoiselles d’ Avignon” for the first time. So maybe you’re on the way to becoming Picasso. You have to do the work that satisfies you.

I have to be honest: I’m not loving this. I miss the whimsy. (I actually dislike whimsy, as a rule, but you made it work. It made the horror approachable.) Here, I’m repulsed by the up-front brutality and find it much harder to drive past it to explore other facets of the work.

There is always something enigmatic about a closed door.

Those western counties weren’t part of the state when it was a colony. Even today, they have have a culture (manners, customs, accent and vocabulary vocabulary,…) that’s distinct from the rest of the state. Speaking as one who’s lived 20+ years on one side of the state and even longer on the other.
