If I remember correctly the ibex project in Switzerland lead to a hunting pause in one Swiss kanton because there was evidence the population was growing and could reconnect with another if allowed to grow to a higher census size.

If you have them in the hand, it is always worth blood sampling for genetic work too. Lots of biobanks would happily take those samples.

This is one of the reasons I am so passionate about the Caleb Scholars program. We give students funds to return home to learn from elders as they go to school, and we find undergrads though professional/PhD programs bc I know how hard it was to return home during grad school.
