According to Star Trek canon, MLB folds in 2042. So let’s enjoy baseball while we can.
After criminals use OpenAI to wipe out millions of Americans’ bank accounts or shut off the power grid across multiple states or whatever, you can listen to the Washington Post’s AI-generated podcast explain that no one could have seen this coming and it would be wrong to hold OpenAI liable.

Orioles: If we can’t maintain our completely unwarranted portion of the Nationals’ TV revenue, this franchise might not survive financially.

Now would be a great time for Toboni to sign Alonso in a sneak attack that would leave the baseball world stunned and officially announce that the Washington Nationals are back!

Unfortunately, I don’t think the Washington Nationals wish to be back yet, so it’s one more year of shopping at Aldi.

In a perfect world, the Nats would have coupled the return from the Soto trade with aggressive spending from ownership to turbocharge a return to contention.

But in this world, the Lerners checked out and Mike Rizzo spent the last few years trying to prove some sort of point.

So now: a fire sale.

The glass half-full way of looking at it is that Toboni’s analytics-first people saw something they like in Ford and can work with, and it wasn’t just a case of “Hey, MLB Dot Com’s Top 100 list has him at at #42. Better get him!”

Which I sort of imagine is how Rizzo would have justified the trade.
