"A New Dimension to Faunus' Ambiguous Prophecy: A Noah-Acrostic at Aeneid 7.96-101" (Classical Philology)

Abstract: Recent scholarship has identified several name-based acrostics in Virgil’s poetry and highlighted prophecy as a significant context for his acrostics. One such acrostic (G. 4.458–65) also reflects Virgil’s interest in Judaism. We identify another name-based Virgilian acrostic in a prophecy scene that likewise concerns Judaism, a marginal reference to the Biblical patriarch Noah that occurs as Latinus receives a prophecy from Faunus (Aen. 7.96–101). After identifying the acrostic, we argue that Virgil could have been familiar with the Jewish flood narrative. Next, we highlight several acrostic signposts in Faunus’ prophecy before arguing that the acrostic reinforces the misleadingly optimistic nature of Faunus’ predictions.

Classical Assn of the Middle West and South rtnesSopodg075525mmill3g6thc660tg7fcg7151 1 gg6gaa h l54 2 41m7m51 · Colleagues, Due to a medical emergency for one of our colleagues, I am writing to ask if you know of anyone who might be able to take on a Latin 101 (MoWe 10:00AM - 11:15AM and Fr 10:00AM - 10:50AM) and Latin 201 (MoWe 8:30AM - 9:45AM) class on Zoom for the time that he is away. We would be able to offer a stipend of $1500 for two weeks of class coverage, ideally starting Friday, 10/24, but later if need be. If the duration should be longer than two weeks, we could of course adjust this stipend. Our colleague shares the following about his courses: We are using the Oxford Latin Course, second edition. In Latin 101, we are on Chapter 10 of Book I. We are a bit behind in Latin 201. [...]I had to start at the beginning of Oxford Latin Course Book III in that class. This is very bad. Although entirely predictable. Once more the humanities are being cut back to prop up STEM and, increasingly, AI investment (including at the expense of bench science). In the past, cuts to humanities were promoted on two separate logic streams that do not hold true: /1

a picture of a book text. The text says "Suetonius adds that, according to some reports, he said in Greek 'Kai su, teknon' (which Shakespeare turned into the Latin 'Et tu, Brute'. It literally means 'You too, child', but what Caesar may have intended by the words isnt clear. Tempest cites 'an important article' by James Russell (1980) 'that has often been overlooked'. Russel points out that the words kai su often appear on curse tablets, and suggest that Caesar's putative last words were not 'the emotional parting declaration of a betrayed man to one he had treated like a son' but more along the lines of 'See you in hell, punk'.
