Just bumping this -- I'll be recruiting a new graduate student this cycle, to start in fall 2026. So will my colleagues Karen Gasper and Reg Adams. I'm currently the area coordinator. Reach out if you have questions about Penn State Social Psychology -- WE ARE!
Although most of my photos right now are of State College autumn, here's Happy Valley from the sky this August. It was awe-inspiring to get this view.

So, come join us here! I'll be recruiting a graduate student to the Empathy & Moral Psychology (EMP) Lab during this cycle, to start in fall 2026.
Ten years ago, I was here at Penn State interviewing for a social psych position, aiming to improve our lives. I recall watching the tree lighting ceremony from dinner, walking through frigid wind to try the best coffee. As we go to the lighting with our now 13-year-old tonight, feeling grateful.

First paper with post doc @amormino.bsky.social! Policy as applied moral psychology. We discussed how motivated empathy & moral pluralism matter, for the public-facing FABBS Policy Insights journal. An opportunity to cross disciplines with health policy scholar Joel Segel
@prcpennstate.bsky.social
Empathy & moral judgment are motivated by many different values. To understand the role that empathy & morality can play in policy, we consider how constituents & policymakers balance costs & benefits of moral emotions & regulate themselves & each other.

Let's Go Heels! Proud of my grad alma mater. Fwiw, I remember the chancellor being nice to my family and me when I visited to give a talk in spring 2024 (he came out to greet my family and talk with us when we were by the Old Well, gave my kids hats, chatted about my time as a student there)

I didn't grab a photo, but it was great to spend a few hours out for coffee and brainstorming this afternoon in the middle of an Arctic blast. Such a great team, and expect some exciting things from the EMP Lab soon! @amormino.bsky.social

I think that this applies to empathy as well
If someone won't cooperate with you when there IS incentive to cooperate...

...it's extremely unlikely that they will later cooperate with you when there ISN'T any incentive.

Just sayin'

Kudos to @byrdnick.com for an excellent talk on cognitive reasoning, philosophical thought experiments, and public-focused decision-making for the Consortium on Moral Decision-Making. Much food for thought, see the video on the Consortium website.

I mean, I'm always going to root for Scherzer. Listening to World Series Game 7 live while I finish some grant-writing. Last time he pitched in a World Series Game 7, the Washington Nationals went on to win. Hopefully he'll go into the Hall of Fame as a National.
