Only time I've ever threatened legal action was after receiving an attendance letter threatening fines/court regarding my youngest (who is awaiting an assessment). I pointed out that they had failed to secure my son's legal right to an education, /1

used very few state resources because, at least when we were going through secondary, there was basically fuck all to be had 😂 Pretty much decided to keep away from them now. Especially MH services. Expensive but safer...

My son's autism diagnosis is useful in that it offers some legal protection. 7 autistic kids across my wider family - couple with learning disabilities others with challenging MH problems. Everyone recognises the needs of others - 0 controversies... One thing I do know is that, personally, I've /1

There's a lot we don't understand about neurodevelopmental conditions. It doesn't mean we have to uncritically accept the views of the critical psychiatrists.

Yes, we had a meeting with the school counsellor that I subsequently learnt was to empower us as parents, but was really about piling pressure on him to attend. Attitude of HT was, "We're doing our best; we need you to do your best." There was a lot of blame in the first year. I'm wary of schools /1

Most teachers won't have experience of this. It will likely just come under the banner of EBSA/EBSNA/school refusal etc. In these cases, such terms serve to direct attention away from the source of the problem.

The interesting thing is how all the autistic characteristics (e.g. sensory sensitivities etc.) ramp right up. You have no choice but to withdraw from the world.

This is the section - I've left in the section on ptsd as it's also relevant.

intensity CBT and graded exposure therapy to get, but without any reasonable adjustments. It would be hard to describe what that does to a human being, but burnt out, yes, and then some.

I don't think burnout in autistic children has the status of a formal MH diagnosis, but it's certainly become a concept that has become more commonly used in MH services. Royal College of Psychiatrists mentions it in its report on the psychiatric management of autistic adults. My son was low /1

Yes, there's a lot of suffering out there. As a parent, I've pretty much given up on the education system - IME it's got nothing to offer us.

It's been like this for years and it's bigger than having unhappy children. Too many autistic children develop serious MH problems and it's down to more than SATs, though they are worth highlighting.

Yes, I'm making a big effort to get more comics in my book corner. It's really helping.

I'd be interested to know how people who do not have a neurodivergent condition view the term neurotypical. Who wants to be described as "typical"?

Yes, it's shocking, and it's part of a wider pattern of avoidable deaths.
