Curious if anyone has any thoughts or other examples of successful amusements. Drop a comment if one comes to mind, I'd love to learn more about this space

If you have a cool idea but are worried about over scoping (as I often am) maybe consider tuning it to be just a toy or amusement. Not sure if this thought exercise is helpful to anyone else but it will hopefully at least serve as a reminder to myself 😆

I think more devs should look into if their vision can be better scoped to amusements as the space is less saturated and can be just as enjoyable for players.

Examples of the excellent Townscaper, or Tiny Glade, I’d classify as toys, and both are fantastic hits and have had commercial success

While laying it out like this makes it seem like games are inherently better than amusements and so on, I actually don’t think that’s the case. Each serves a different purpose

4. Game: an experience that relies on 2 or more mechanics that interact with each other such that the interaction creates an experience (game loop) that’s more than the sum of its parts. The game loop is the fun

2. Toy: an experience that provides 1 primary mechanic -> you can interact along 1 axis, and that one axis is the fun

3. Amusement: an experience that provides 2 or more mechanics, unconnected-> there are multiple axes but they don’t interact, and each mechanic independently provides its own fun

Not sure if there’s still room, but I’m making a game specifically about herbalism and alchemy!
