If the objective was to win support and squash the electoral chances of Reform UK, then the strategy had the opposite effects.

❌ Reform UK vote intentions unchanged (or at worse better)

If the objective of being tough on immigration was for Labour to be perceived as more right-wing & nativist, the strategy worked.

❌ Labour was seen as more anti-immigration & more right-wing
❌Immigration became more salient as an issue
❌ But Labour’s perceived competence on immigration fell.
