because in theory, a longer watch time means the person who watched the video ended up liking the video more (it faithfully represented the thing they expected to see). YT can charge advertisers more on videos/channels with longer views. By that measure, they CLAIM to be disincentivizing clickbait.

I can see it being annoying for sure. I don't think the ads thing is the intended effect, because if you start watching a video and then stop right away, that actually hurts the stats (it lowers the "viewer retention" metric). The stated purpose is to test which image leads to longer watch times 1/2
