To everyone who's crying "bloodbath" over the SNL turnover — which, look, I'll miss those cast members and writers, esp. Gardner — the 1994 to 1995 season would like a word...

This batch of Criterion releases in November could not be more all-over-the-map or eclectic, and I'm 100% here for it...

Still think that Lesley Manville in PHANTOM THREAD is, even after all the awards and accolades given at the time, one of *the* great unsung screen performances of the last 10 years. Just grace notes galore here.

Totally psyched to be in New Orleans as a guest of the Overlook Film Festival, was even more psyched (and moved) to see this photo up on the wall of the Prytania Uptown Theater…

Zach Baron's interview with Ben Affleck over at GQ is, per usual, a fucking great read, but it's also an excuse to shout out Affleck's work in THE WAY BACK, which continues to be one of those "oh, wow!" all-timer performances for me...

That was on my to-watch list before I talked to him, and didn't get around to it...gonan catch up with it ASAP. If you can find it online or have access to Channel 4 online in UK, check out THE VIRTUES, a four-part series he did with Shane Meadows in 2019. Absolutely devastating, brilliant.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is in HARD EIGHT for three minutes, and in that time you get a fully realized asshole, complete with cock-of-the-walk showboating, adolescent insecurity, hero worship, pin-pricks of self-loathing. I've watched that scene 100 times & it never ceases to knock me the fuck out. 📽️

As a die-hard Stephen Graham fan, I'd have caught up with ADOLESCENCE eventually. Then @sepinwall.bsky.social inspired me to fast-track it—and it's the best thing I've seen on TV in ages. Like THE WIRE for male rage, w/ four single-shot eps standing in for full seasons. Absofuckinglutely astounding.

Having worked my way through all of Ellroy and Pelecanos (and most of Elmore Leonard and Joe R. Lansdale), I'm starting in on Carl Hiaasen's novels... and good goddamn, his Skink character is as good as pulp heroes get...

I remember that the first time I saw this cartoon in Jules Feiffer's memoir BACKING INTO FORWARD, I audibly gasped, as if someone was plainly saying out loud the quiet things I said in my head. I had this hanging on my cubicle at Time Out NY for ages. It still cuts to the bone for me.

Torn between "JFC why do we still not consider documentaries actual-honest-to-God films!!!" and stoked that both Ross and Kapadia, who each made their first narrative features (that have documentary elements in them) got nominated re: the DGAs...

Second viewing of REBEL RIDGE, my only regrets are a) not seeing this on a big screen and b) not putting it higher on my year end list. This is the real fucking deal

The last time I saw TV ON THE RADIO, it was in Prospect Park and my kid was sitting on my shoulders watching them play. The show they put on last night at Webster Hall was, no joke, fucking epic — they opened with ‘Young Liars’ and did a version of ‘Wolf Like Me’ that nearly singed my beard off.
