This AI programming stuff is pretty wild… when I asked for some comments, it figured out that I was indeed trying to filter out Alaska, Hawaii, and the territories.

Closing schools to match supply with demand is how you keep the public school system as a whole strong. In the face of declining enrollment, school closures must occur. You can’t fight demographics.

Fresno County needs to work on its evacuation zone shapefiles. There's a void along the county line, right in the path of this fire that is apparently not in any evacuation zone (thankfully, it's in the middle of nowhere and not populated).

With the amount of heavy equipment earth movement going on, it would be hard to guess that this is actually a wetland restoration project!

Mechanically stabilized earth with retaining walls isn't too crazy. They built this heavy rail grade separation on the San Francisco peninsula, which has a similar grade crossing density issue.
