I mostly discussed/argued about Star Wars (preferring to play defense) at the old place; probably will do the same here (hopefully finding fewer bad-faith disagreements).

I also draw things and work in a comic book store.
It's a bummer. Those figures looked really well sculpted and designed.

I think it's possible that there are enough people who are fond of the original Tron that there could be 10,000 of them willing to buy this; but I doubt the vast majority of that group were even aware of this campaign.

The Ewoks replacing Wookiees in the final battle is not some secret information Kurtz set slip. Lucas has been very up front about it since the 1983 BTS TV special (filmed before the movie came out), and gave his thought process behind it.

People didn't like the Ewoks, so they worked backward from—

If Lucas was so concerned about toys, he would never have killed off Boba Fett as a joke. That was already a toy that was very popular with the established audience. If he were making story decisions based on toy sales, the sure bet would have been to prominently feature Fett and others like him.

—and discussed.

The Death Star? Its destructive power? Both are shown.

It doesn't have to be the exact same experience as someone familiar with the other movies in order to be a positive, coherent one.

Sure, it leads into another movie, but that can be watched after, doesn't have to be before.

Well, wait, I think it probably could work without seeing anything else first. Try to imagine, honestly, how a new viewer would actually experience it.

What does the story deal with that isn't also established within itself?

The Empire? Rebellion? Perfectly understandable based on what's shown—

ANH is also just a useful title for basic utilitarian purposes. There are now thousands of stories that fall under the general title of "Star Wars"; ANH allows us to specify that particular one.

It's like objecting to the first Star Trek being identified as "TOS".

Of course movies can be bad.

You simply aren't making a convincing argument as to why this movie is supposed to be bad; you're just accusing it of misdeeds without presenting any evidence.

—what would naturally be there in that circumstance.

And can we not use the word "slop" just to describe something you don't like. It lessens its potency when talking about truly objectionable things like AI, and it's intrinsically insulting to anyone who does like that thing.

There's no "fan service" in RO that compromises the story (unlike TFA) or is even out of place, other than the two cantina guys (but they were apparently just something Edwards really wanted, so even that wasn't deployed cynically).

Other than that one exception, every pre-existing thing is just—

Oh, we've made it to the Classics line! Love that line. Some really great designs in there.

I'm still hoping for a Masterpiece of Cliffjumper that transforms into a Porche 924 with non-pennyracer proportions.

This was maybe THE reason Top Gun: Maverick's effects were so well received.

It's not that there wasn't any CGI (there was actually lots and lots), it was that the camera work was constrained by the reality of filming.

Zelda 2 was my first Zelda, so I've always loved it too.

Even though I came to agree that the first game was better, I never had the "WTF is this?! Why is it so different?" reaction to the second that people who played them in order seemed to have.

The "theme park ride" label is a categorical description that's been applied to Star Wars on through to any other movie that has visual spectacle to it.

I don't think he was making a comment on the quality of "Marvel movies" specifically, that was just the phrase that was going around at the time.
November 17, 2025 at 9:41 PM
My only issue with Scorsese's comments was that I have a hard time believing that he's ever bothered to actually watch a Marvel movie.

And I doubt he even knows makes them "Marvel" movies or why they're called that - he said as much in one of the Oscar-time roundtable interviews a few years ago.

Also, “taking houses”? Does he mean they are somehow stealing them?

Because certainly immigrants generally don’t have the money to buy them any more than an average citizen.

I guess it depends on what the threshold is between a few people championing something/a cult following and a generational shift in appreciation.

And I was young at the time, but evidently, people didn’t care much for the Ewoks; so I expect anyone who hated the Ewoks would’ve hated their movies.
November 13, 2025 at 2:12 AM
I think you’re ignoring a lot of counter-examples of things that never “found their audience”.

The Ewok movies (or animated series) never have. The Trek animated series. People feel pretty much the same about each of the Indiana Jones movies as they did when released.

So he had Yoda kill Palpatine.

And when asked how then the Empire could have possibly come to be in Ep.IV, his answer was, "Eh, they'll figure something out in the books. I just really think the audience would be more satisfied with a happy ending".
November 11, 2025 at 6:48 PM
The analogy I've used to highlight the incongruity of the story trajectory from one trilogy to the next is that it would be like if when he got to the end of Ep.III, George decided, since this was the last movie in the series he was going to make, it should have a happy ending.

We already knew that the Republicans weren't going to stand for us when it comes to lowering our healthcare costs.

Now we know that you won't either.
