Actually I first learned about it from a little sign by the magnolias at an arboretum local to me, several years ago. So yeah, I was an adult when I learned this but it wasn't exactly last week

It's the fungus. The class of fungus they belong to, in this context at least, are called "white rot" fungus. They are actually competitive and antagonistic toward lignin-degrading bacteria, and the latter tend not to proliferate in the presence of white rot fungus

Interesting. Was this before mushrooms like Turkey Tails evolved which can break down lignans? Fungi are afaik much older than plants

The reason that magnolia flowers are more rigid and less soft compared to other flowers is because magnolia trees belong to one of the earliest lineages of flowering plants, and predate bees. They evolved to be pollinated by beetles, and still are
