This might be a naive question, but what about the professional societies that manage the journals? Could they just dump Elsevier et al and move to a non-profit publishing model?

I would love to see the for-profit publishing industry taken down in my lifetime.

We give our work away for free and then buy it back again. Madness.

I think the difference is that we had many screening tools to catch and exclude bots and low-effort responders. The LLMs can pass all of those tools.
