End. 🧵 Saying goodbye to this mini-series after it managed to come into it's own with great creative choices and use of continuity is bittersweet, but I look forward to seeing what issue number five of this mini has to provide.

🧵 I absolutely love the way that continuity is used here. In addition to being callbacks that reward longtime readers, they're reframed with additional bits of characterization and details specific to the plot of Strange Armor in a way that helps them to serve more value than just a novelty.

🧵 Sprinklings of good gags like Concrete's commercial appearances or his attempts to intimidate a couple of troublemakers managed to be funny and also reinforcing context behind Ron's strengths, limitations, wants and insecurities. Really the stuff of what makes truly excellent comedy writing.

End. 🧵 I may be gushing on things that feel specifically designed to appeal to me, but I have a difficult time not just being unapologetically biased towards this issue even if it brushes under the rug some more important developments. Whatever the case may be, I really enjoyed this issue.

🧵 but I'd be remiss not to highlight this amazing two page spread. The art, the technique, the little gags. This might not be a popular comparison I'm about to make, but between references to Larry King, MTV and David Letterman, it feels like a bit from Adult Swim's Smiling Friends.

🧵I'm a bit mixed the alternate spin to Concrete's rise to prominence as a household name, but I'm an easy sucker for when Paul does the running gag of Ron being merchandised to hell and back. Those pages full of Concrete themed memorabilia are like candy to me.

🧵I love the pieces of characterization Ron has, being so much more outwardly proactive and exercising his agency and powers in ways not seen alot up to this point in the main series. He'll do what he can and needs to in order to get what he wants but has moral scruples to not go too far.

🧵 Didn't forget to post, procrastination almost won. Issue 3 of Strange Armor picks up from the previous cliffhanger and gets the ball rolling with a re-exploration of events leading to Ron reaching the point that he's at as Concrete.

End.🧵For closing notes, Stamberg is an interesting antagonistic force here. I like the manipulative nature in which he emotionally placates Ron. I'd like to see him become a mainstay just because it gives the government a less vague pull force against Ron's endeavors.

🧵A change I actually really love is the added depth between Ron and Maureen's relationship and it highlights that the original approach in issue 4 left a bit to be desired. Their friendship here develops a lot more organically given the fact that it's a central plot focus here.

🧵 Admittedly, I was bummed and not entirely satisfied by the choice to kill off Ron's close friend instead of leaving his fate ambiguous. If the choice was done to remove the possibility of there being "Two Concretes," I feel like it'd still be accomplished by the former choice.

🧵 It's a little difficult to talk about the story substance to some extent seeing as it's a retelling, and there's not much shared that isn't already known by this point say for a retcon or two. That being said, the pivot towards a horror-esque tone is very welcome here.

🧵 There's is some lovely detailing, shading and use of grayscale that gives the work a level of depth unseen in previous entries. Already a huge hand in it's favor and in helping to give it a distinct identity. It's quite appropriate for this being an origin story retelling.
