Buckle up friend it’s time for bread made out of crisps 🍞 🥔

Full disclosure it was not a flawless first attempt.

The aim was to make a loaf of bread where the majority ingredient is crisps.

1. Buy 450g of crisps, without shame

Steve I knew you would bring the perfect pun game 😆

Hey love you too. The unexpected value add in this experience is there’s a fork at step 5 where you’ve got a quick base for a decent vichyssoise

I cut this loaf into croutons and fry it’ll be crispy crisp bread crisps this is getting to be like Inception

2. Another reason for doing this is to rinse salt and fat off the crisps because the bread would be inedible otherwise.

So my reckon is the flavour from any other kind of crisp would be very mild at best. But hey I’m willing to try

😆 Thanks Ann.

On your question I know 2 things:

1. For the recipe to work you have to turn the crisps into a sort of mashed potato. I didn’t quite get this right it was too loose. One of my steps is redundant, probably soaking overnight.

The only problem is I have run out of crisps so I can’t make the crisp crisp sandwich

The bread tastes… ok? The crisp fragments are crunchy in the crust. It is very soft. There is a crisp aftertaste.

I think I have learned enough to execute this better next time.

Thank you for following bread made out of crisps 🍞 🥔

14. Once cooled say 90 minutes cut the bread and behold what you have wrought against all odds.
November 23, 2025 at 2:48 PM
13. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.

Hahahaha that really is bread made out of crisps anything is possible
November 23, 2025 at 2:46 PM
12. Once risen enough so the loaf is touching the cling film remove the cover and spray the top with water. This took about 45 minutes which is too fast shouldn’t have bothered with the extra yeast.

Transfer to the oven and bake for 40 minutes.

You can see the top of the loaf is splitting FFS

11. Shape the dough and put it in a greased and lined loaf tin to rise. Cover with cling film. Preheat the oven to 200C (fan)
November 23, 2025 at 2:40 PM
10. Knead the dough on an oiled surface for about 5 minutes. Put back in the bowl and cover to let it rise until doubled in size, this took 20 minutes
November 23, 2025 at 2:38 PM
9. Halve the dough and throw one half in the bin with a sigh
November 23, 2025 at 2:36 PM
8. Smash up the remaining crisps in the bag using a rolling pin and add to the dough. Add another 3tsp of yeast as well because you know you’re going to halve this. Knead it all together.
November 23, 2025 at 2:35 PM
7. Spend maybe 20 minutes in a real old mess adding a further 400g of strong white flour and mixing / kneading until you have a ball of dough that is way too big
November 23, 2025 at 2:32 PM
6. Transfer the slurry to a bowl and mix with 300g strong white flour, 70g wheat gluten, 3tsp instant yeast, and 1tsp of sugar even though you know it’s not going to work
November 23, 2025 at 2:30 PM
5. Transfer the crisps to a food processor and create a crisp slurry.

At this point I tasted the crisp slurry and was happy it wasn’t too salty at least
November 23, 2025 at 2:27 PM
4. Simmer the crisps for 5 minutes in boiling water and drain them again in a colander.

Note this is when I realised there would be trouble ahead
November 23, 2025 at 2:24 PM
3. Drain the crisps in a colander
November 23, 2025 at 2:21 PM
2. Weigh 350g of crisps into a bowl and cover with cold water. Leave to soak overnight. The intent here is to remove some salt and fat
