It's the kind of thing one only discovers as an exchange student. The town is in NE France, nestled in the Jura mountains, a part of Franche-Comté. It was once considered a part of Spain. It's the only place where I've seen a gendarmery.

I think I still have the guidebook with entry 'Besançon, birthplace of Victor Hugo, ..." before noting he only lived there a few months. There's a Roman ruin proximate to the store. It's close to a road that one can climb to the town's Citadel, which is home to a zoo (with aquarium] and a holocaust
