Finally got to see HELLZAPOPPIN'. Joe Dante said it's a huge influence on GREMLINS 2 and, like FARSCAPE on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, it's easy to see why.

Not in a rip-off way; both have a healthy love of... anarchic non-sequiturs.

Ended '25 with I VAMPIRI, Italy's first horror movie. Also its first vampire/mad scientist movies.

Began '26 with SCALA!!!, about England's theatre for outcasts. Goes well with MIDNIGHT MOVIES, about the Elgin Cinema in the US. ERASERHEAD was important to both.

Those UNDERWORLD movies were pulp, in the best way. Subtext with the preternatural like in (the first five seasons of) TRUE BLOOD is fantastic, but sometimes I want vampires punching werewolves to just be vampires punching werewolves.

The aesthetic didn't hurt, either.

Hard to tell, but the POSSESSION box is MASSIVE (due to all the screaming).

There's enough time to say this: Happy 20th anniversary, DOMINO. Directors failed by not borrowing from your bonkers cinematography like Tony Scott wanted.

That shame extends to the internet. Shots like this are cool, but they're the least interesting part of it, yet searches are lousy with them.
A well-composed and lit shot in Domino that most directors would kill for, yet don't represent how stylistically daring the film is.
