But yeah, there's a reason why Chrono Trigger is one of the all time greats. Gorgeous sprite art and character designs, a legitimately novel and twisty plot, and some really novel mechanics. All of this in 1995!

The fact that this game wasn't included on the SNES classic is criminal.

And if that last pic didn't tip you off, Chrono Trigger's character design was done by the late, great Akira Toriyama.

Which means we get all kinds of fun designs, including "What if Bulma was allowed to get into fights?"

Or, there's a part where you get captured and the bad guys take all your weapons so you can't fight.

Except, one of the characters is a fur bikini-clad cavewoman who's so strong she doesn't NEED weapons, which means if she's in your party at the time, she can just demolish everything in her path.

This game also may be my first encounter with Cosmic Horror? As the game's Final Boss is an ancient and incomprehensible parasite-god. And it takes a lot more than ramming a boat into its head to take it down.

And! The game is riddled with neat little tricks and twists. Like, a little over halfway through the game, the Mandatory Silent Protagonist character (and therefore the typical player's self-insert) fucking DIES. And then all the supporting cast has to deal with it.

For one, the whole game is based around time travel, which if nothing else encourages the kind of repetition and mastery one gets from multiple replays.

And yet, returning to it after several years, I'm still finding myself challenged? Mostly 'cause I've forgotten a lot of the tricks, but still.
