Reeves now raising taxes on landlords - who pay a lower rate on rental income than their tenants. Not National Insurance - a new categorisation of income tax, so retirees will pay it too. However, company landlords won't, so this may see more landlords incorporate to dodge it.

To be fair @moreincommonuk.bsky.social found it to be the most popular and well known policy of the government's first few months. I just reckon the impact on vibes has just been drowned out by everything else

Good letter in the FT from the other day (though I would argue that someone who inherits a property with an assured shorthold tenant in it and, rightly, doesn't evict them just because they can, also counts as an accidental landlord)

I can't tell whether Danny Pinder at the British Property Federation wants to remove barriers to the delivery of affordable housing, or views the affordable housing component as a barrier to the delivery of build-to-rent schemes

There was a time when this trend - which indicates more renters becoming home owners - would be celebrated. Hard to take Savills seriously when they fail to acknowledge that more home owners means fewer renters, all else being equal. The real problem is not building at the same pace as population

One thing that I find always gets missed from analysis of affordable/social housing investment is the share that is contributed from the private sector via s106 etc. @resi-analyst.bsky.social has heroically produced the companion chart to the one in the previous post 🫡

The interest-only product in George's story is pitched as helping the non-rich - but if mortgages are facilitated by mum and dad's buy-to-let portfolio that still sounds like a recipe for entrenched wealth inequality to me

Really interesting analysis from the Economist about manufacturing jobs/what replaces them, and I wonder how this would stack up in the UK.
