Today from life-finds-a-way dept, at least one is a LADY! I'd never sexed them bc it involves handling; I didn't want to bother them. Never seen mating, but they can store sperm for months so could've been before I got them! Will see if viable in 2-4 weeks! Mysteries indeed!

Giant clams partner with algal symbionts, which share food with their hosts. If the algae overpopulate, the clams poop them out! The poop can be taken up by neighboring corals or other clams, which can use the algae themselves, in a kind of fecal transplant! (320)

A valvometer is like a fitbit for clams, used to measure the opening and closing of the valves. I installed valve sensors on juvenile giant clams I farmed at Biosphere 2, finding they opened up in the daytime to bask and photosynthesize, partially closing at night to avoid predatory worms (319)
