One day, I'll get back to this late-80s/early-90s Brooklyn PI novel...
It was the second week of March and winter had decided to hang around, dumping almost two feet of snow within spitting distance of the first day of spring. By the time the last bit of snow melted, there would be a disgraced college basketball coach, a terrified pregnant teen, a couple of pissed off cops, and a dead senator. And guess what poor idiot was all tangled up in the middle of that mess. Yup. Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to answer the phone. It was Tuesday, around 10 am, and I had decided to sleep in. As a rule, I’m not the kinda person to sleep late, but Channel 11 was showing Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla on the Late Night Movie and, what can I say, I’m a sucker for guys in rubber suits beating the crap out of each other. I managed to find my way to the little kitchenette between my bedroom and my office. I fumbled with the can of Maxwell House and somehow managed to get the coffee pot going. What is it with sleeping late that makes you feel like more of a zombie than if you hadn’t slept at all? I grabbed the OJ out of the fridge and did a chug-a-lug that would have made a frat boy jealous. As the coffee pot was doing its thing, I went back into my bedroom and threw on a pair of jeans and a hooded sweatshirt. It was 10:30 by the time I settled in at my desk, a steaming mug of fresh coffee glued to my right hand. I was looking over the notes that I had left on my desk the night before. It was a simple divorce case. She thought her husband was cheating. He denied it. She was right. And I had the photographs to prove it. Or I would as soon as I got them developed. That’s when the phone rang. I answered. “Duncan Investigations.” “Is this Duncan Investigations?” Didn’t I just…? “Yes.” “Are you Mr. Duncan?” “Yes. Tom Duncan. Yes.” I stared at my mug. There might not be enough coffee in the world for this conversation. “How can I help you, Mister–?” Whoever was on the other end of the phone hesitated. I could hear them breathing. Not like in a porn-y Darth Vader way. More anxious. Nervous. They hadn’t been sure that calling me was a good idea and they still weren’t sure now that I was actually on the other end of the line.
