PREDATOR: BADLANDS successfully walks a tightrope, and pulls off turning the Predator into the likable, fun, quippy star of its own Marvel-ized sci-fi action franchise. Dan Trachtenberg somehow makes it work, and the result is a movie that's a departure for the franchise, but cool in its own right.

Made it a Rami Malek weekend by, in addition to Nuremberg, re-watching one of the best indie gems of the last 20 years in SHORT TERM 12. Incredible cast (Brie Larson and LaKeith Stanfield in this are next level). And such a moving, funny, poignant, lived-in film. Seek it out if you haven't seen.

Saw NUREMBERG and found it to be a compelling, fascinating film that feels (sadly) very relevant and resonant. Russell Crowe delivers his best performance in years, and Rami Malek and Michael Shannon are excellent as well. Some janky filmmaking / pacing at times, but recommend this one nonetheless.

Just watched the PLURIBUS pilot. Hot damn! Welcome back Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn. It was amazing to watch a pilot that felt like a real episodic TV pilot. Can’t wait to see where this one goes.

It seems like it's not going to get a big awards push, but man, THE LIFE OF CHUCK should be a Best Picture contender. Still thinking about it all these months later.

Just a reminder that in the age of algorithmic clickbait and misinformation, it's on YOU to fact-check memes/articles/videos/infographics that you post, and verify the source.
All this to say, if I see one more article with the headline "John Carpenter Confirms The Thing 2!" ... oh man.

Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.

Fellow California residents - if you haven't already, make sure to VOTE YES today on Prop 50.
We have an amazing opportunity to take the fight to Trump and show him that if he and his corrupt administration try to rig elections, we are not going to take it lying down.

Capped off another "Vampire Weekend" with a re-watch of NEAR DARK. Man, this movie goes so hard, and Kathryn Bigelow really is a cinematic force here. Her visuals paired with that Tangerine Dream score - the best. And the cast! Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Adrian Pasdar, and Jenny Wright rule.

BUGONIA: another memorable film from Yorgos Lanthimos that will be rolling around in my head for a long time.
Emma Stone shows again why she's one of the best, with a fearless performance. Jesse Plemons is also excellent. A challenging but singular film that deserves to be seen and talked about.

Followed that up with a first time watch of 1936’s Universal monster sequel DRACULA’S DAUGHTER. This one has a lot of boundary-pushing stuff for a 90 year old movie, and I found it to be a lot of fun. Gloria Holden is certainly iconic and memorable in the title role.

Continued our “Vampire Weekend” with ..: space vampires! Yep, I watched Tobe Hooper’s bonkers 80’s movie LIFEFORCE, which is truly something. Serious British Actors (including Patrick Stewart) talking gravely about alien vampires who seduce and then suck out your soul. An all-timer weird movie.

I keep thinking back on Guillermo Del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN. The way he faithfully adapts the original novel, yet makes key changes to have it reflect on our modern world and his own struggles as a creator…

Followed that up with a first-time watch of one of the only John Carpenter movies I’d never seen: THE FOG. This was cool. The creepy vibes! The synth score! The simple yet awesome creature designs for the ghosts! Carpenter movies are such comfort food for me, even when they’re creepy.

Had been meaning to watch Amy Heckerling’s vampire comedy VAMPS since I listened to the recent Blank Check episode on it. Tonight seemed like a good night. Such a fun film - and clearly very personal despite the high concept. Krysten Ritter and Alicia Silverstone are pitch perfect as undead besties.
