Hi folks, I’m Danny - a professor of physics and computing education at Michigan State.

I post about college, science, politics, education, technology, and punk rock. Mostly snarky shitposting. 😘

I’m a union organizer pushing back on admin’s worst impulses.

this is just a start.

if this passes, don't expect it to stop here.

they will add countries at the whim of the administration or simply claim the agencies can do so.
Yikes. Banning people for activities such as co-authorship and advising a graduate student is completely unreasonable in a modern research environment. And a retroactive 5 year ban is wildly unfair.

The next follow-up should be

You say no bullets, but what about the missiles you’re using against fishermen?

Where is the follow-up?

What gives you the right to, in your words, "take back" independent and sovereign countries? From whom are you taking them back, their citizens?
Bessent: "We are taking back Latin America through our economic leadership. There will be no bullets."

This is my jam.
A question came up in the lab today:

How many fish could you (completely) boil with the energy it takes to train an LLM like ChatGPT?

Wild takes abound!

Blaming drops in international rankings (🤮) on universities in the US welcoming more students and faculty that were not part of the historical elite.

One of the most reductionist arguments I've read.

Author is a scholar of Uni rankings.

So homeowners will NEVER pay off their homes???

This is the stupidest fucking solution.

Build more affordable and accessible housing.

Public funds go to public science for the public good.

They already have private science. It’s called a company.
This is a VERY mixed bag. I like some of what he's proposing, but offloading science research to private companies is a DISASTER... and that pales in comparison to the strong possibility of stopping NASA's critical climate change research.
Ahead of Jared Isaacman’s renomination for the position of NASA’s administrator, a dispute between him and its acting chief Sean Duffy spilled into the open, with potentially profound consequences for the U.S. space agency

Billionaires spent at least $21M to defeat Mamdani.

That is the tax generated on ~$1.05B of income based on his 2% plan.

I would have thought rich people would be better with their money.

"She said faculty received 3% annual increases, and university support staff received 1.9% pay raises."

News to me, given that I am faculty and got less than a 3% raise. UNTF contracts currently give us 2.5%; anything beyond that is whatever our chairs can get despite the 9% cuts across the board.

Disagree as you see fit, but an America that allows for all cases to be made and the people deciding to try a different way is great.

The swinging back and forth sucks, so delivery on promises will matter.

But this card carrying DSA member is glad to see our party being allowed to try.

I hope that MSU's Board of Trustees and our administrators see last night's election results and feel shame.

I hope they feel like fools for kowtowing to a racist and sexist federal government and for spending money and time reworking titles and policies.

I hope they see American standing up.
