Chicago’s home. Interested in where we’re going and how we get there, in the very literal sense.

All opinions mine, he/him.
(I also would like to eliminate my bus stop, it slows down the 36 and I would rather the bus just be faster)

This is how you know you are a true transit policy nerd

And winter on Saturday.

Chicago is unusual here. Other cities have evaluated this tradeoff and come to different conclusions. We could too.

There is always a balancing act. We can’t have stops literally every 10 feet, but they also need to be more frequent than every 10 miles. But the spacing we have isn’t automatically “right” just because it’s the status quo. Those riders would also benefit from faster and more frequent service.

The 60 day clock starts after he receives it.

I agree with the point about the relative lack of focus on the everyday carnage, but I do think this burning story is horrific and it is not crazy for there to be major coverage. It is shocking and senseless. The total randomness of it also understandably freaks people out.

The best time to build a subway is 102 years ago. The second best time is today.

Also we tore down one of them and replaced it with a highway median version (Forest Park branch)

Yes I think it’s important to distinguish changes that make the system easier/more seamless to use vs straight fare reductions.
November 22, 2025 at 3:08 PM
When you ask actual transit riders what they want if given the choice between more transit and cheaper fares, the answer is essentially always more transit.

I have done these interviews/focus groups. It is not a close call for anyone.

I would say “never change” but I don’t mean it. Please change.

Uber, Lyft, what we’ve already allowed in terms of AVs, etc
November 20, 2025 at 2:34 PM
Yes, the whole thing (deployment via guinea pig cities) is bizarre and not how I would do it. You and your neighbors are the testing population.

Nothing that the government has done regarding the last several rounds of “new tech” makes me think we would get to the point of fully banning them.
November 20, 2025 at 5:09 AM
Look, I too want the government to be more proactive on this. But I do not believe that we are going to stop this. Given that, I’d rather channel it toward something that achieves goals while severely restricting/penalizing behaviors that have negative externalities (such as zero occupancy trips).
November 20, 2025 at 5:08 AM
Also, for better or worse, deployment is already happening. AVs are here. We have to deal with them.

By “one of them” I mean something like Waymo vs Zoox, etc
November 20, 2025 at 3:54 AM
I am very interested what happens if (when) one of them is clearly safer than others after wide scale distribution. Pretty strong rationale for the government to set that as a floor for safety.
