it was an insult in school in ireland. equivalent to calling someone an idiot (especially when prefixed by ‘mentally’). there’s bad vibes from it.

an irish tiktoker (forgetting her name now!) made a very useful distinction between ‘small’ talk (genuine inconsequential chat, e.g “i saw a fox today”) and what she called ‘low’ talk (masked etiquette enforcement, e.g “you’re looking a bit tired…”). I adore the former and struggle w/ the latter!
