This is what I wrote to SF Gate's advertising contact after seeing ICE ads on sfgate.com. His email is at [email protected], if you're curious.
This morning I was reading your article about San Luis Obispo and I got bombarded with ICE ads. That's the right verb because there are twelve ad placements in that article. And every single one was for ICE. Since you work in the media, you aren't new to the reality of ICE kidnapping an autistic boy and keeping him in custody for a week, even as his parents put up Missing posters for him. Or going to a family's home and shooting their dog. Or leaving a teenager abandoned in the middle of a traffic median after taking his father in front of him. (All stories from this very week, by the way.) You don't have to allow Google Ads to advertise for the agency that is carrying out these atrocities. You're choosing to allow them. Stop.

Dolezal chuckles as she says this, as if it is the most clever and original idea anybody has ever had. I don't know how many times a white person has told me that they don't care if I'm "red, green, blue, or purple" when they are trying to explain to me just how "not racist" they are—I've lost count. I do know that I've rolled my eyes every time. As my brother Ahamefule said to me once, "They may not care if I'm red or green or blue or purple—but they sure as hell care that I'm black."

King-Miller makes sure to give this ride plenty of sardonic humor, queer lust and longing, and characters who we both want to shake some sense into and go into battle alongside. Definitely for fans of The Exorcist, but much more richly satisfying because the horrors in this story – just as in real life – are rampaging patriarchy, unquestioned dogma, and the bloody aftermath when hideous secrets howl their way out of a terrified, powerless body.

On our tour, Craft described some of the rules that govern life at the camp: every time tenants come back to the camp, they’re searched by security guards. Anyone who misses the 10PM curfew is locked out for the night. Outside guests aren’t allowed at any time but staff conduct “wellness checks” three times a day, violating tenants’ privacy. I spoke to several members of the grassroots organization Street Watch LA (SWLA) as well as tenants at tiny shed camps, who elaborated key rules: tenants aren’t allowed to be gone for over 48 hours, can only bring two 16-gallon bags of personal belongings with them, and aren’t given a key. Michael, a tenant at the “Village for Vets” tiny shed camp on the West LA Veterans Affairs campus, has been demanding that staff provide tenants with keys and was fed up with the contradictions: “They’re trying to find me housing but they don’t trust me with a fucking key?”

“The rents dipping the way they did made it difficult for them to pull the financing together,” Rhoades said. “It’s very disappointing, we worked really hard on that project for those guys.” That coupled with high construction costs made the project financially infeasible. Residential high-rises over eight stories can cost upwards of $500 per square foot to build, where shorter projects clock in closer to $300 per square foot, Rhoades said.

We believe that knowledge and information should be free and accessible to everyone around the globe. There are many developing countries where you cannot easily buy your favorite books. They are literally out of reach of many people. Secondly, Amazon doesn’t deliver to many countries and not everyone has the financial means to buy stuff from the internet. We also believe it should be really simple and easy to download your desired PDF or EPUB e-book. There should be no sign up required, no membership registration needed, and no annoying ads or pop-ups. You should get what you want. Nice and easy. That’s why we built this site. Reminder that even if going to protests is not an option for you personally, you can support those who are. Amplify calls for events, help watch people's kids and/or pets, etc. I have lots of helpers who watch this little guy when I go to things.
