Because when a person justifies the horrific crimes russia commits against Ukrainian children, against women, against the entire peaceful nation — they have already betrayed their own humanity. What can such a person give their children? What moral values can they pass on? How can they teach compassion if they cannot feel another's pain? How can they speak of goodness while silently agreeing with evil?

You've created an exceptionally clear argument here; thank you! Looking at the insane crop of broligarchs we've already allowed to take root in the US, this part really hit me:
Technological development, one of the root causes of our predicament, hasn’t stopped. Foreseeable advances may give wealthy individuals and small groups powers that were, until recently, restricted to the wealthiest nation-states. Even if these powers are never used to unleash gruesome terrors, there will inevitably be hideous errors. This is formalized as the unilateralist’s curse: powerful individuals or small groups can make disastrous mistakes and are more likely to do so than larger groups, even if every decision-maker were completely altruistic.

They did an ultrasound of the heart and internal organs this year. For his age, the doctors said, he is a wonderful healthy guy. There was a briefing to one of our subcommittees a couple of weeks ago early on, but it was very light on details. And look, I've been through this stuff many times before-stuff we did in Afghanistan and Iraq and Somalia and elsewhere. And when we have a target in this case, the committees are regularly briefed on the specific, very specific details— who was targeted and why, and what was the accumulation of intel and evidence that led to the strike. And they've always given us the answer: this was the person, this is who it is, this is why we did it. None of that has been given on these Venezuelan strikes. But press secretary Leavitt today saying, "We've been very transparent on this" — that's just a complete lie. They haven't been transparent at all. Sargent: Well, just to talk about the legal rationale for a second, previous presidents have claimed this inherent constitutional authority for limited strikes on terrorists and so forth. But Trump is now applying this to civilians who just aren't engaged in an act of war against the United States in any meaningful sense. I want to ask you this pretty straightforwardly, Congressman. Has anyone in the administration at any point presented anything remotely like real evidence to lawmakers or to their staffs indicating that they actually do credibly know that these are drug traffickers? Smith: No, they have not. And so they haven't even presented that background, as I said. But also, even if they did, this is not justified by any stretch of the imagination.

Has Ukraine been invited to participate? Who and how will represent the European side? Are there any plans to sign a document - and if so, what kind of documents? [Peskov]: So far, there are no details regarding any of the points you mentioned, and there is no clear understanding on this matter yet. A lot of "homework" still needs to be done. Both foreign ministries - ours and the U.S. State Department - will have to focus on finding answers to the questions you've raised.

It’s gross to see someone being so bigoted in public. Like watching an adult of sound mind take a shit in the middle of a public park because they don’t care that it’s uncivil. So embarrassing to see. Seeing the GOP do it constantly has not desensitized me. And yet many pretend it’s normal.
Much like Jenrick, Lam has been accused of shifting with the prevailing winds on issues of identity and immigration. She certainly shares his unsentimental toughness on the subject. "Everybody who's in this country illegally I think needs to go home," she says. Indefinite leave to remain is off the table, too. "There are also a large number of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn't have been able to do so. It's not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn't have been able to do so. They will also need to go home. What that will leave is a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people."

A few days before the taping, Colbert's producers held a prep call with the candidates and their aides.
