Looking at Rightmove just now for the small home counties commuter market town where I live - 15 houses on the market at £1M or more (only 4 of them £1.4M or more), versus 210 under £1M. More £1M+ than I'd expected, to be honest.

Interesting to see this. And I see what you mean about the source value. I'm struck by how the canon of great FWW poetry is now so familiar that it's somehow become detached from the war itself. These 'unliterary' poems are refreshingly direct on that score.

I wonder what she's been reading/been told about the tax. Hard to see what rational reason there might be to be worried about a tax of around one one-thousandth of the value of her property

This boat, now in IWM London, came from a vessel that was attacked by a German naval raider in 1940. The raider's captain ordered his men to fire on survivors in other boats. He was later convicted of war crimes and died in prison.

Something certain people might like to reflect on.
