Author/historian (Duke Ellington's America, Who's In The Money?) musician/songwriter, Yankee in London, Senior Lecturer.
In so many ways, a Culture Hack...and democracy champion.
Been following Rosalia since her 2017 debut. It’s satisfying to see her fulfil her potential over four excellent albums. Her new LP "Lux" is so ambitious, w/touches of opera and flamenco—yet romantic, poetic, danceable as well. Nothing else like it today. One of the best things I’ve heard in 2025.

@zadiesmith.bsky.social’s elegant cutting essay about the lack of appreciation for the British Library’s skilled workers (victims of below-inflation raises for years, some having to take multiple jobs) which translates to a lack of regard for Brit culture itself:

The dumbly arrogant Trump administration--once again foolishly alienating European allies that the U.S. needs.

Trump is cynically using this tragic shooting by an apparently mentally ill person to do what he wanted anyway: spread more hate to immigrants and cover up his culpability in this. The Guard wasn't needed in DC & used as a political prop, often picking up trash.

Someone needs to inform the many fans of Nigel Farage, the unqualified, highly intolerant head of the Reform party, who may become the next Prime Minister and who keeps on saying the opposite to falsely inflame UK public opinion. Yes, he's a pal of the U.S. president.

Trump doesn’t know if this was an “act of terror” yet, he’s just spreading fear and hate before facts are known—as usual. Maybe this was just a crazy person. And let’s not denigrate 1000s of Afghanis brought to US because they saved US soldiers in the Afghan War.

Why on earth should the civilized world care what Putin will accept? He started a war of choice fueled mainly by terrorism against civilians, his army is failing, economy is flailing. How does he have any power to decide the endgame? Zelensky deserves just as much if not more.

WTF is going on in these United States? Our felon president was caught on tape at the end of his first term asking the Georgia Secretary of State to find him 11,780 votes so he could falsely declare himself the winner of the election of that state in 2020. So now, cheaters prosper?

On the new remaster of Prince’s vastly underrated “Around The World In A Day” album💙(1985), there are radical new mixes of “Raspberry Beret,” “She’s Always In My Hair” etc. What idiot thought they could improve on Prince’s original work?! Hideous stuff from the estate...

Judges nationwide and even some Republicans are criticizing, resisting Trump & GOP’s constitutionally highly questionable mid-decade redistricting / gerrymandering of several states for 2026 midterms. Voting rights ace @MarcEElias explains in video⬇️:

What they⬇️said is not only factual speech, but protected 1st Amendment free speech. Like the recent Comey and James charges, these cases won't fly & maybe Trump knows this—but he wants to intimidate future critics, to seriously threaten anyone who criticizes him on anything. Wimp.

It was NOT a “controversial video” unless you are a die-hard anti-justice Trump partisan. Sen. Kelly & 5 other Senators were only quoting long-term policies in America’s military and intel services that they should not follow "illegal orders". Misleading headline from the Washington Post:

As I've said all year, Trump will never truly support Ukraine, backing for no sensible reason Putin the illegal terrorist aggressor. This new "peace plan," from Russian talking points, shows support must come from elsewhere, or Ukraine is over, despite years of brave fighting against the odds.

Feeling sad over how heartless, unjust my home country's gov't has become. What possible advantage to the world in the long- or short-term could there be in allowing lying terrorist Putin to conquer the thriving heroic democracy of Ukraine? Can't Trump see Putin is not his friend?
November 23, 2025 at 8:03 PM
Trump is such a pro-autocracy bastard, pushing another "peace" plan giving nearly all advantages to terrorist aggressor Putin. As Zelensky said 2 hrs ago, it offers Ukraine a choice between "dignity" or losing its most powerful partner. What a tragedy U.S. now sides with Putin.

I’m guessing Trump & Hegseth thought they’d try to inject more extreme hate into the Armed Forces to reflect their dark souls, the blowback was too much for them and they relented. Oh don’t worry, they’ll come back & try it again in a different way. That’s who they are.

With all this false info at the nation’s most important and (formerly) trusted site concerning health and disease, how many children will die? How many formerly dangerous, now conquered diseases will return to endanger America’s youth? Trump spreads incompetence and death.
