Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything: The Basics is a great starter book, and even though I've been cooking for decades I still go back to it for things like cooking time for dried beans or substitutions.

My favourite Moosewood is Sundays at Moosewood, which has recipes from around the world.

I don't cook meat, so one Thanksgiving I hosted and my sister brought the turkey. An hour's rest in a cooler for the drive turned out to be perfect, so I'm told.

If you have internet access but no library you can get books that are deliberately free from almost any retailer. There are newsletters that will tell you which books are free this week. There's no justification for theft.
