It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

When reviewer #2 tells you that you should just do the Incredibly Obvious Thing to prove something that actually has no bearing on the figure you are presenting without realizing that there is a reason no one has ever published the Incredibly Obvious Thing.

This is a cute way of saying 1) people paying attention have become nihilistic or 2) they’ve decided it’s not going to ruin their lives, just those of the plebes.

What’s everyone’s take on reviewing papers written by past advisors or closer associates?

I realize that a lot of this is case-dependent, so I’m more interested in hearing folks generalized philosophy.

Every single congressional Democrat needs to be out there, right now, insisting that Pete Hegseth resign right now and announcing that he will be held accountable for committing war crimes.

If you do not demand accountability here and now, they will only become more emboldened.
Exclusive: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave an order to “kill everybody” in the first strike on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. After two men survived, the mission commander ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions, according to two sources.

I’m pretty sure that this is the actual plot used to demonstrate when not to use linear regression.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

I’m in charge of an article we resurrected from an MS thesis. One reviewer replied with “big feelings” over some minor figure details held over from the thesis (map projection, etc.). Being on the hot seat while slightly removed from minor content makes it feel very “young man yells at cloud.”
old man yells at cloud is written on a newspaper
Alt: old man yells at cloud is written on a newspaper, Abe Simpson, an elderly cartoon staple, shakes his fist at a single white cloud in a blue sky with his mouth open as if yelling

Geology continues to be a small world: I was chatting with someone on a group ride today about paradigm changes and the old guard pushing back, specifically about the advent of plate tectonics. I mentioned that my dad had been at Princeton in the 70s, turns out they went to grad school together.

Artisanal mining occurs in many more places, and with many more resources, than just South Africa and coal. A point absolutely not made to bash this article, but to highlight the abhorrence people in poverty will tolerate to get by.

'Artisanal miners' is the phrase used for South Africans who salvage coal from abandoned mines. It's a grueling and risky life. "Bit by bit it's killing something inside me," says one such miner.

In a new study, sensors & cameras were operated along roads & in storm drains INSIDE 3 coastal North Carolina communities to study how often flooding—from nuisance to larger—really happens. Answer: A lot more often, & for longer, than the current tide gage network suggests.

Tonight I discovered my grandma’s Goodreads page. She wrote kid’s books from when my sister was born until her dementia prevented her from it. It’s very odd to see how people interpret parts of my childhood, but more so, it’s heartening to see her work still impacting people.
