We need to fundamentally change how shutdowns work. Even if it just meant that legislators couldn’t leave the building, it would at least attempt to equal pressure on both sides.

Right now, those without shame or empathy have a distinct advantage.

The Republican Party has dedicated the last few decades to dismantling the government so why would they care if it dissolves? They’re clearly ok with hurting their constituents so they will always have a higher tolerance for a shutdown.

I still think that Democrats fumbled hard by not securing anything for the shutdown. It makes them look like they shut everything down for nothing.

But I don’t understand how you can negotiate with a party that fundamentally does not care if people get hurt.
