Just a high school history teacher doing some reading and thinking about history and stuff. Interested in mobs and collective action around the American revolution.
I previously shared (and accidentally deleted) about the really excellent book “The Great New York Fire of 1776” by Benjamin L Carp (2023). Thinking more about using primary documents cited in it with context from the book as an in-class activity for weighing evidence. #history #highschool

Excellent opening paragraph from the introduction of “The Ties That Buy: Women and Commerce in Revolutionary America” by Elen Hartigan - O’Connor (2009). #writing #history

Also, while throwing out questions, curious about teachers feelings on paper v digital. I was all in on digital a few years ago, but have been trying to use more paper to get kids off screens and avoid some AI. Many students like paper too. But paper has its own unique issues. #teacher #highschool

Curious about teachers perspectives on teaching high schoolers more the disciplinarian approach or the more traditional narrative approach to history. Began this year disciplinarian oriented, but am feeling an inkling toward the narrative. Balance seems right, but how is maybe what asking. #history

As I read more, I am realizing a winning formula to get my attention in history is:

The Great __(event)__ of __(date)__

You can’t help but be drawn into whatever it will be. #history

Ok did anyone else catch where, in the new “The American Revolution” series by Ken Burns, a solider who was actively having one leg amputated after the Battle at Saratoga and a cannonball comes into the operating space and takes off his other leg?!? 🤯 actively searching for more info on this.

Just read this wonderful little book that is a discussion with the historian Bernard Bailyn. As a new history teacher, I love resources like this one that speak to the practical experience in teaching and in doing history. I was especially struck by his notions of sympathy. #history #bernardbailyn
